The survey team that had been sent to the remote village weren't expecting a lot of trouble; though not in frequent contact this area was already known to the Guild, and their task was simply to update fifty-year-old maps and look for any changes to the local ecology. What they hadn't expected was for a landslide to have exposed evidence of some truly ancient ruins. The first few weeks afterward were a fervor of excitement as a preliminary excavation began--the ruins seemed to be a place of worship, though to what was unclear.

However, the good luck didn't last for long.

No one really knows what started everything, what it was that befell the team out at the dig site. Only one man returned, covered in gashes and near delirious, and he didn't remain for long. The transformation took him as the healers had begun to tend his wounds, and the creature he became fled back out into the wilds.

Within a week, all those he had injured began to change as well. And so the curse spread.
